Give Peas a Chance

As you may know, I've been struggling with the transition from mushies to "regular" food.  I've tried a couple recipes that I thought would work only to find myself stuck and very uncomfortable.  Last night I found a recipe that I actually like and didn't get stuck.  The recipe came from a Weight Watcher's magazine.

Shepherds Pie

1 pound lean ground sirloin
1 c. frozen peas
1 jar fat free beef gravy (12oz)
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 c. reduced fat cheddar cheese (optional)
mashed potatoes

Brown and crumble beef in large skillet over medium-high heat.  Prepare mashed potatoes while beef is cooking.
Once beef is cooked, drain if necessary and return to pan.  Add peas, gravy and black pepper.  Cook, stirring frequently, for 3 minutes or until thoroughly heated.  Spoon beef mixture over mashed potatoes.
Makes 6 servings (1 cup)  Calories: 229  Protein: 23g

It was a bit bland so I had to add some salt to taste.  I had leftovers for my lunch today.  Sad thing is, no one else in my family liked it because "OMG!  It has peas in it".  I, myself am not a fan of peas, either.  However, in this recipe, you really can't taste them!!  So go ahead, give peas a chance!

Also if you have any family favorite mushie meals, please leave it in a comment or send me an email through my profile.   Thanks!

  1. No No NO - I can't do it. HA. I HATE peas. My Grandma used to make me eat how many old I was and I swallowed them whole like aspirin so I didn't have to taste them! LOL

  3. OMG, I am just like Drazil. I hate peas and used to swallow them whole too. Anyway, you could substitute corn or mixed frozen veges and it'd be a hit. I made meatloaf covered in BBQ sauce, mashed potatoes and squash (I know the squash thing might not work for family). Other mushies were ravioli/pasta sauce, chicken burgers and any thick stews and chili (my fav). But no peas-never.

  4. Thanks everyone! I'll have to try the meatloaf. Hubster really likes that. Lasagna bake went over well. I haven't had any luck with anything with chicken in it though.
And I like squash! I can't wait til it's in season at the Farmer's market. I love grilling it with zuchinni and onion, a hint of EVOO and Mrs. Dash.

  5. There is nothing more delicious than big, fat, crispy, sweet garden peas popped straight out of the shells and into your mouth. Especially if you've picked them out of your (I mean your Mother-in-law's) garden. Yum!

  6. I'm definitely an odd ball because I like brussel sprouts and red beets, too! Just don't pickle the beets...yuck!
